Demen is a family planning, advance care planning, caregiving, legacy, and grief-support platform designed to help individuals and families organize information, document wishes, preserve memories, and navigate important life transitions.

This Privacy Policy explains what information Demen may collect, how that information may be used, when information may be shared, and the choices available to users.

By creating an account or using Demen, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

Information We Collect

Demen may collect information that you provide directly, including:

• Name
• Email address
• Profile information
• State or geographic region
• Family roles
• Planning goals and onboarding preferences
• Advance care planning preferences
• Funeral and memorial wishes
• Legacy stories, reflections, photographs, and memories
• Voice and video recordings you choose to create
• Transcripts generated from your voice recordings
• Uploaded documents
• Family contact information
• Caregiving information
• Journal entries
• Support requests
• Information submitted through forms or questionnaires

Demen may also collect limited technical information, including:

Demen will treat this information with heightened care. Users should only upload or share information they are authorized to provide.

Demen is not currently intended to serve as an official medical record, legal records repository, or substitute for secure systems maintained by healthcare providers, attorneys, financial institutions, or government agencies.

Family Sharing and Invitations

Users may choose to invite family members, caregivers, or other trusted individuals to participate in certain Demen features.

Users are responsible for:

• Inviting only appropriate individuals
• Confirming that contact information is accurate
• Reviewing what information is being shared
• Updating or removing permissions when necessary

Invited users should only be able to view information specifically shared with them.

Demen must provide users with the ability to revoke access where the feature supports shared access.

Document Storage

Demen may allow users to upload, create, organize, or save important documents.

Demen does not guarantee that an uploaded document is legally valid, properly executed, notarized, witnessed, current, or accepted by a healthcare institution, court, financial institution, or government agency.

Users remain responsible for:

• Confirming legal requirements in their state
• Keeping original documents where required
• Providing copies to appropriate professionals and family members
• Updating expired or outdated documents
• Consulting a qualified attorney or healthcare professional when needed

How We Protect Information

Demen will use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect user information.

These safeguards may include:

• Secure authentication
• Encrypted network transmission
• Access controls
• Restricted administrative access
• Secure database services
• Security monitoring
• Data backup practices
• Account deletion procedures

Some content — including Legacy Library recordings, photos, and keepsake files — is stored on your device. Content stored on your device may be included in your device backups (such as iCloud or computer backups) according to your device settings, and is removed from the device if you delete the app.

No digital platform can guarantee absolute security. Users should protect their passwords, devices, and account access.

Sharing of Information

Demen may share information only in limited circumstances, including:

• At the user's direction
• With individuals the user explicitly invites
• With service providers needed to operate the platform
• To protect the safety, rights, or security of users or others
• When legally required
• During a business transfer, merger, acquisition, or restructuring, subject to applicable protections

Service providers should receive only the information reasonably necessary to perform their services.

Third-Party Services

Demen may rely on third-party providers for functions such as:

• Authentication
• Cloud storage
• Database hosting

Demen currently uses Supabase to provide account authentication, its database, and private file storage. Voice recordings are transcribed using Apple's speech recognition service on your device or Apple's servers, according to your device settings.

These providers may process limited information according to their own policies and contractual responsibilities.

Notifications and Communications

Users may receive:

• Account-related messages
• Security notifications
• Password reset messages
• Family invitation messages
• Planning reminders
• App updates
• Support communications

Users may manage optional notifications through app or device settings. Certain security or account notices may still be required.

Data Retention

Demen may retain information while an account is active and for a reasonable period afterward when needed to:

• Provide services
• Maintain backups
• Resolve disputes
• Prevent fraud
• Meet legal obligations
• Complete an account deletion request

Information should not be retained longer than reasonably necessary for its intended purpose.

Account Deletion

Users may initiate account deletion from inside the Demen app.

When you request deletion, your account is first scheduled for deletion with a 30-day recovery period. During those 30 days you can restore the account by signing back in. After the recovery period ends, your account, stored documents, and personal information are permanently deleted.

When deletion completes, Demen should delete or de-identify associated personal information unless retention is required by law, necessary to resolve security concerns, or temporarily preserved in secure backups.

Users should be informed that:

• Deletion becomes permanent after the 30-day recovery period
• Shared information previously downloaded or copied by another person may remain outside Demen
• Certain backup copies may remain temporarily before routine deletion
• Content stored only on your device (such as Legacy Library recordings) is removed by deleting the app, and may persist in your own device backups
• Legal or security records may be retained when required

User Rights and Choices

Depending on applicable law, users may have the right to:

• Access personal information
• Correct inaccurate information
• Delete information
• Withdraw certain permissions
• Request a copy of information
• Restrict certain processing
• Object to certain uses
• Revoke family-sharing access

Children's Privacy

Demen is not intended for independent use by children under 13.

A parent, legal guardian, or authorized adult should manage any information related to a minor.

Demen should not knowingly create independent accounts for children under 13 without appropriate consent and safeguards.

Information About Other People

Users may enter information about relatives, caregivers, beneficiaries, healthcare representatives, or other individuals.

Users must only provide information they have a lawful and appropriate reason to provide.

Users should avoid entering unnecessary sensitive information about another person without their knowledge or consent.

Legal Requests and Safety

Demen may preserve or disclose information when reasonably necessary to:

• Comply with legal obligations
• Respond to valid legal process
• Prevent fraud or abuse
• Protect users or the public
• Investigate security incidents
• Enforce applicable terms

Demen is not an emergency monitoring service and does not continuously review user entries for evidence of danger or crisis.

Demen may update this Privacy Policy as the platform evolves.

When material changes are made, users should be notified through the app, email, or another reasonable method.
